Powered by TrueMotion, mobile app identifies risky behaviors and reinforces safe driving habits
BOSTON (October 25, 2017) – As part of its ongoing efforts to create safe driving habits among newer drivers, Safety Insurance today announced the launch of a new mobile app, Drive with Safety. Powered by TrueMotion, the leading provider of telematics solutions for the insurance industry, the iOS and Android compatible app identifies and shares information around distracted driving behaviors. Safety Insurance customers who download and use the app will both gain better insight into their teen driver’s behaviors and receive discounts on their premiums.
The Drive with Safety app engages families in becoming safer and more responsible drivers with impactful Distracted Driving information. Using the sensors built into most cell phones, the app captures distracted driving and other risky behaviors. Drive with Safety automatically provides scores for key driving behaviors during each trip, including: distracted driving (calls, texting, the use of other apps like email and social media); speeding, hard braking and driving during high risk periods (i.e., late at night). The app also provides the current location of each family member.
“We have long been committed to driver safety, especially among teen drivers, and want to help our customers keep their family safe,” said Ann McKeown, Vice President of Insurance Operations at Safety Insurance. “Our goal is to help teens become more aware of their own risky habits and how often they are engaging in those behaviors. From there, we think they can be a powerful voice with their friends and family about focusing on the road and not getting distracted by digital devices.”
Each member of a family using the Drive with Safety app can see each other’s driving score, motivating them to drive responsibly, improve their scores and engage in discussions about safe driving.
“Automobile crashes are already the leading cause of fatalities for teenagers, and the growing epidemic of distracted driving is only going to make it worse,” said Ted Gramer, CEO of TrueMotion. “Safety Insurance is playing a critical role in encouraging and incentivizing parents and teens to be more aware of, and take steps to become safer drivers.”
According to a SafeKids report about 40 percent of teens say they have been in cars driven by other teens who were distracted while driving by texting or talking. TrueMotion’s proprietary data show teens are distracted about 20 percent more per trip than parents. Three in four people who download and install TrueMotion apps are found to reduce distracted driving.
Effective immediately, current and potential Safety Insurance customers can learn more about the Drive with Safety app by talking with their independent insurance agent. Agents can share more information on downloading the app and relevant Telematics discounts for eligible operators.
Headquartered in Boston, Mass., TrueMotion combines the power of mobile technology, machine learning and data science to reduce the number of automobile crashes and fatalities. Its patented technology uses the sensors built into smartphones to accurately identify drivers and score their overall driving habits, including distracted driving. Up to 75 percent of drivers who use TrueMotion technology reduce distracted driving and other risky behaviors. The company provides an enterprise version of its technology to leading insurers.
