Surely it won’t catch anyone by surprise if we tell you that things are not getting any better. According to statistics recently published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 35,092 people died in crashes on U.S. roads during 2015. That’s a 7.2% increase from 2014, and the largest percentage jump in nearly 50 years. To make things worse, that trend has been observed to continue into 2016.
What’s causing the problem? Distracted driving is a leading factor. However until now that insight has mostly been gathered via driver surveys (aka self admission). As we begin to look at actual driving behavior, a sample of 7,595 drivers who took 521,885 trips and more than 4.8 million miles on the road, we can start to see just how pervasive the problem of texting while driving actually is.
See for yourself.
