We have some very exciting news today. We’ve partnered with Unipol, Italy’s largest auto insurer. Unipol will leverage data-driven insights from the patented TrueMotion platform to power its smartphone telematics programs, starting with Linear’s BestDriver program in Italy.
BestDriver is an amazing program. It’s designed to promote safe driving overall and fight distracted driving in particular. It measures distracted driving, driving aggression, and speeding. Drivers can monitor their trips, driving styles, and levels of distraction in the BestDriver app. Safe drivers can win Amazon gift cards up to €20 every week and get a discount on insurance with Linear.
Linear’s BestDriver is revolutionary for a number of reasons. First, it’s Italy’s first smartphone-only telematics program by an insurance company. Telematics was born in Italy with hardware and there’s still a strong reliance on it with auto insurers. We know smartphones beat hardware for collecting driving data. It’s great to see insurers like Unipol and Linear adopt smartphones in the birthplace of telematics. BestDriver will be the first of many smartphone-only programs in Italy and Europe.
Second, anyone in Italy can download the free BestDriver app in Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store. This hasn’t always been the case with Try Before You Buy programs like BestDriver. Hardware like OBD II devices makes it expensive to scale and puts hurdles in front of people who want to participate – like applying for and installing an OBD II device. By going smartphone only, Linear has cast the widest net possible for customers. And, there’s significantly less friction with a smartphone-only program – everyone knows how to download and install an app.
Third, Italy has primarily used telematics to handle claims, especially with fraud in southern Italy. With BestDriver, Linear is using telematics to segment drivers and acquire the safest ones. They’re also creating a new channel to communicate with their best new customers. We’ve seen that users in programs like BestDriver spend 12.6 minutes with the app per week.
Fourth, the program is tackling distracted driving in Italy, one of the top three causes of crashes in the country. If thousands of drivers use the app and become safer drivers, it could save lives. To drive the point home, Linear made a video on the 23 stupidest things you can do with your phone. The top one is using your phone while driving.
Deploying smartphone telematics is great, but if drivers don’t use the app it’s hard to have a successful program. Leitha, Unipol Group’s competence center for Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, did an amazing job on the app experience. Drivers love the app. Here’s a small sample of what they’re saying: “It’s the first time I’ve seen an app allow you to win a real reward with safe driving.” “It’s a great app! I already won €5 on Amazon.” “It’s an awesome idea! Thanks, Linear and Amazon – you’re the best!”
How often do you see people thanking an auto insurer for their mobile app?
Linear’s BestDriver shows us what the future of auto insurance will bring in Italy, Europe, and beyond. We’re proud to be partnering with them on this project and many more to come. If you’re in Italy, we hope you’ll download the app and win. We’d love to hear about your experience.
